MESSAGE FROM THE EX-CHAIRMAN

This was read during the meeting:

Dear members,

Let me first of all thank Dr N. Mlingi and his colleagues for the initiative they took to call the General FONATA meeting and all of you for turning up to revive FONATA which, in my hands and others in the ex-executive team, has stalled for nearly a decade. I take full responsibility for the stagnation and apologise for it.

The objectives we had when we founded FONATA are as valid to day as they were then. All we need to do is to rededicate our resolve to address our mission for the benefit of our fellow citizens.

As an outgoing Chairman I would like to suggest a few things as we forge ahead.

1. Let us strengthen our network of food and nutrition related institutions in our country - Compiling a directory might be something to start with. We had started networking with international institutions – that too should be continued.

2. Let us as far as possible have an executive team with members hailing from Dar es Salaam where currently most of our members reside.

3. Let us contribute generously to the cause of our association [I for one will this year contribute Sh. 1 million payable in five installments effective the end of February 2009]

Let me end by recalling a saying of the wise,

“We are what we eat” and yet you will agree with me that most of our people do not have access to food that is adequate in quality and/or quantity. We have the keys to the food stores let use them to enhance the quality of life of our people.

I wish you a successful meeting and realization of a new executive team.

Yours immediate Past Chairman

Prof Nicholas Bangu

Two weeks after the meeting:

Thank you very much for appraising me on what transpired at the revival meeting. Let me also congratulate you for being elected Secretary of the association and wish you best success. I am also congratulating Dr Alexander Mosha for his well deserved election to lead our organization. Please convey my congratulations and best wishes to the other elected officials of the Executive.

Pro Nicholas Bangu

Member/Immediate Past Chaiman.

MESSAGE FROM THE NEW CHAIRMAN

Dear members. Warm salutations from me and the executive committee members. We are all new and certainly we shall embark on changes and activities that will enable us to achieve the vision, mission and functions of the association.

Then previous committee has laid down a firm foundation on which we shall build our future course of action and achievable targets. We have the following challenges and issues ahead of us and we shall deal with them accordingly.

The current national and global food and nutrition situation is bleak. Food security is threatened by low production, meagre trade and the economic turn down that has cut down income and access to food. As a result malnutrition especially among vulnerable groups has escalated world wide. The HIV/AIDS epidemic has demonstrated the strong link between nutrition and the disease. Good nutrition is essential for people living with the disease, especially those on retroviral drugs.

Global warming and environmental degradation have contributed to poor food supply, which has been worsened by drought and frequent political strive and wars on the African continent

In the field of science and technology, there have been significant biotechnology, developments related to food and nutrition which we must address. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and food products are a major issue related to food safety.

Consumer’s interests have been trampled under foot and we eat junk food, while ignoring our traditional healthy natural foods,

Emerging food and nutrition related diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, rift valley fever and bird flue are a real threat.

Let us note that government has recently announced the need to process and preserve food, in order to raise availability and add value for better returns as mandated in the

FONATA articles. These are just a few challenges.

Lastly I would like to invite you to contribute regularly to the news letter. Tell us what you are doing and events in your area. Help us to grow by recruiting

your colleagues into our organisation.

Message from the Hon Treasure

I am pleased to have this opportunity to greet all members through this associations newsletter. I have a great hope that as a team, we will work together to fulfill our mission and vision.

As a matter of fact, we all should know that funds are the most important together with other things of course to assure survival of FONATA, so let us contribute generous to the cause of our association and make it alive.

During the FONATA AGM held on 20th February 2009, a total of 32 members renewed their membership by paying 5000/= as registration fee and 5000/= as part of annual fee. The total collected was 320,000/=

Thanks are given to Prof N Bangu (immediate ex-chairman) for pledging one million Ths for this year and he has already paid the first installment towards the end of February 2009.

Efforts are made to follow-up people to finish pay the remaining part of their annual subscription fee as well as motivate more people to join the association. Proposals are being prepared as another effort of raising funds.

FROM THE SECRETARIAT DESK

It affords me great pleasure to communicate with you through this forth issue of the newsletter of the Association, the first from me after being elected your new Secretary. I believe you are all in good health and you have had successful endeavours since we last communicated during our AGM. Although FONATA outdoor activities have remained dormant, the Secretariat desk has been relatively busy. Since taking office in April 2009, the Executive Committee has made considerable in putting things in order. Dr. A.B. Sanga, the immediate past Hon. Treasurer has prepared financial bank statement and handle it to new Hon. Treasure Wessy Meghji.

FONATA Membership

Dissemination of information to the general public on the existence of the Association continued through different means including informing people during different nutritional forums, distribution of fliers, e.mail and eye to eye contacts.
